>> About Rain Gardens

Rain gardens are gardens specifically designed to reduce rainwater runoff from areas such as parking lots, driveways, and other paved surfaces, thus reducing the stormwater contributions to rivers, bays, and lakes. There are many positive environmental benefits to creating rain gardens including:

      > Reduction of erosion
      > Reduction of water pollution
      > Reducton of flooding
      > Diminished groundwater

Rain gardens were originally created in Maryland and have been growing in popularity as a way to reduce the harm to the environment. Initiatives for rain gardens have grown as the benefits have been recognized, including a large-scale initiative in Kansas City to create 10,000 rain gardens.
